James R. Gerber had an active career in working with the physically disabled. He spent many years as a wheelchair repair technician at Hiram G. Andrews Rehabilitation Center in Johnstown, PA. Daily he encountered the equipment problems of the amputee. He engineered many solutions and created/constructed many devices for the physically handicapped that substantially improved their physical comfort and emotional outlook. His Swing Away Stump Support was one of such devices. He established Gerber Chair Mates, Inc. in 1989 to provide this wheelchair accessory to amputees nationwide. As a World War II Veteran he sought to have soldiers with amputations be able to return to their highest level of functioning. He knew they would need comfort and independence despite their injuries. He knew his Swing-Away Stump Support could offer this as well as aid in proper healing.
